There are these kind of nerds that chew all nails off their fingers every time they get more “intellectual”.
One and the most conspicuous trait about them all is they are intellectually smart, always.
Unfortunately, I’m not one of them.
But, I cannot help noticing them every time I get a chance to visit areas of learning, areas of intense serious learning.
Today, I decided to note down something about one of these nerds.
This very one was a little different from the cohorts I had observed before.
His name as I learnt, later on, was Joe. The cool Joe, I called him.
He always sat in the northwestern corner of the Memorial Library, deep into his minds, in his own world, every day except Sundays.
He was different yes, unlike others of his kind – the academic genius, he was a founder of a million dollar company, a top performer in his class and à la carte social being is not word enough to describe him.
I envied him. You probably would have too.
When he was done with this day studies sessions, I was seated three rows away from him.
I hurriedly assembled my stuff – a pen paper and bottle of water and jerked in his direction fast enough, making it appear like a coincidence that we bumped into each other, like in the movies.
All I wanted was to milk him dry off the secrets for his successful ventures at the time when academia was more demanding and if he was considering quitting school, like the Zuckerbergs and the Brad Pitts.
The Power of Showing Up and Consistency
The 30 minutes chit-chat flew faster than I expected. I couldn’t help noticing the man was of few words, it came not as a surprise though.
At the end of our time together, I was left with a few lines of wisdom for greater success.
They are the very lines he wrote for himself, back in secondary school, and uses them to reboot his system for greater success, every time and it works time and again as a guiding principle to breakthroughs in every aspect of human life – be it health, academia, sports or business.
He said to me,
I have done nothing way different from what you’ve done and neither do I harbour unexploited secrets to success. You already have what you need to steer your life in the direction of your dreams.
All it takes is for you to show up.
Show up more than often and have a good attitude. Be ready and willing to pay the price.
When done, leave the rest to time.
Time will show you the positive side of “showing up”.
But, for now, all you’ve got to do is stay in the process long enough to give it a chance to smile right back at you.
The whole thing starts with a choice. A choice to show up today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
The Compounding Effect of One-Step-at-a-Time
I took heed the pieces of advice with suspicion and little trust.
“Just like that? Keep showing up?” I asked and he affirmed with a node.
What about the fingernails thing? Why do you play with them and sometimes chew them? There must be wisdom in there oozing straight to the brain right through the teeth.
I thought about it for a while standing right there, not a tinge of conviction in my mind. But, I saw it fit to ask about it next time, that is if it comes to pass.
I’m writing this today, 3 months since when I talked to Joe.
I cannot deny the simple fact that showing up, again and again, works magic.
Maybe it did work for us two only, me and Joe. I know there is always a room for the 3rd person. And that 3rd person is YOU. Yes, you.
Do you want to develop better habits? Show up and start practicing them today.
Do you want to lose those extra kilos? Or perhaps get lean muscles? Show up and take a step at a time, starting today.
The same happens to all other areas of life that need improvement, be it getting to a new different level of financial security, fighting cancer, getting rid of poverty or getting that, which you’ve longed for, for a very long time.
Just show up. Start doing. Do it today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, again and again.
the simple easy-to-do-action of showing up compounds over time and success will come when you least expect.
